How Do I Repent?
(B) The Urgency of Repentance
- Saint Pachomius said:
“Do not delay repentance, lest the messengers surprise you and take you while you are unprepared, and you suffer great distress and see at that moment the dreadful faces surrounding you with cruelty, taking you to dark, terrifying homes filled with fear and fire. Awaken with all your strength so that you may be faithful over your Master’s wealth and enter His kingdom with joy.”
- An elder said:
“I love the person who sins, regrets, and confesses his mistake more than the one who does good and justifies himself.”
- Saint Basil said:
“It is good not to sin, and if you do, it is good not to delay repentance. If you repent, it is good not to return to sin, and if you do not return, it is good to know that this is by God’s help. If you know this, it is good to thank Him for His grace and constantly ask for His continued assistance.”
- Abba Timothy said:
“If you fall, do not be lazy or sluggish; rather, rise quickly. If you go astray, hasten to return to the path so that you may find the straight road, for the straight road is very good. It has no detours and does not require much time; quickly you will reach the city of peace.”
(C) Self-Examination
- Saint Isaac said:
“If you dedicate yourself to repentance, every day that does not confront you with something humbling should not count for you. And every day you do not sit for an hour by yourself, reflecting on how you sinned and where you fell, to correct yourself, do not count that day among the days of your life. Woe to those who do not weep, do not grieve, and do not cleanse their faults while there is still time for repentance. For there, against their will, in the waves of fire, their faults will be purified until they have paid the last penny, which is the smallest fault.”
- Be hard on yourself and grieve it so that the enemy may flee from before you.
- Reconcile with yourself, and you will be reconciled with heaven and earth.
- Examine yourself thoroughly and see how you slipped, and ask God to forgive you.
- Judge yourself alone in your deeds so that you are not deceived by negligence and complacency.
- Examine every day where you are lacking, lest you suffer in your time of distress.
- A person who constantly forces himself and acts with the intention of righteousness will not sin without repentance.
- Whoever’s heart is not contrite and saddened before God will not be freed from foolishness.
- He who reconciles with himself will reconcile with nations, even if he is divided within himself.
- An elder said:
“We must examine our souls daily and review our lives with repentance.”
- Father Nestorian said:
“A monk should examine himself every evening and morning. What have we done that pleases God, and what have we done that displeases Him? This is how Father Arsenius lived, and this is how we should examine ourselves every day of our lives. If a person does much but does not keep it, he has destroyed it. But if he does little and keeps it, it remains with him.”
- Saint Sypronica said:
“If we sin against the kings of this world, don’t we, against our will, find ourselves thrown into prisons and punished? Therefore, for our sins, we should imprison ourselves and punish ourselves with hardships to drive away the voluntary memory of the impending torment.”
- Saint Amon the Bishop was once asked:
“What is the narrow and difficult path?”
He answered:
“The narrow and difficult path is this: to watch over one’s thoughts and, above all, to cut off one’s desires. This is what is meant by the saying, ‘We have left everything and followed You.’”
Question:
How can a sinful person seek the Lord at all times?
The answer:
“I asked God to reveal the answer to your question to me. He said to me:
’Purify your heart from all the thoughts of the old man, and I will answer the question of your heart. For My gifts are given to the pure, and they are for them. But as long as your heart is moved by anger, hatred, and all the other passions of the old man, wisdom will not enter it. If you desire to receive My grace and My gifts, drive out the enemy and keep him away from you. And My gifts will come to you.
Have you not heard that no servant can serve two masters? If you are My servant, do not serve the devil. If you serve him, do not imagine—whoever desires My gifts must follow in My footsteps. The lamb bears no evil. I endured all passions without speaking of them to any human. Although I command you to be as gentle as doves, I find you adopting the harshness of passions. Beware, lest I tell you, ‘Go to the fire you have kindled.’
When I heard this, I began to weep, asking for His mercy to save me from the evil of the old man and bring me to the new man so that I may accept everything that comes to me with gratitude. Pray for me that I may flee from justifying myself.’”
- Some of the fathers said:
“God endures the sins of the world, but He does not endure the sins of those in the wilderness because the expectations from those in the world are different from those who have renounced the world. For those in the world have many excuses, but we, what excuse do we have, we who have chosen the wilderness and left the world? The truth is that severe punishment and burning fire will befall those who know the will of the Lord and do not live according to it.”
- An elder said:
“God endures the sins of the world but does not endure the sins of those in the wilderness.”
- Saint Sypronica said:
“Many live in the mountains and do the worst deeds of people and destroy themselves.”
كيف أتوب ؟
(ب) الاسراع الي التوبة
+ قال القديس أنبا أنطونيوس:
أطلب التوبة في كل لحظة، ولا تدع نفسك للكل لحظة واحدة.
+ قال القديس أنبا باخوميوس:
لا تؤجل التوبة لئلا يفاجئك المرسلون ويأخذوك وأنت غير مستعد فتصيبك شدة عظمة وتعاين حينئذ الوجوه الشنيعة التي تحيط بك بقساوة وتمضي بك الي المنازل المظلمة المملوءة فزعا ونيرانا. تيقظ بكل قوتك كي تكون أمينا على مال سيدك وتدخل الي ملكوته بفرح.
+ قال شيخ:
” أني أهوي الرجل الذي يخطيء ويندم و يقر بخطئه، أكثر من الرجل الذي يعمل الصلاح ويكزي نفسه “.
+ قال القديس باسيليوس:
” جيد ألا تخطيء، وأن أخطأت فجيد ألا تؤخر التوبة،وأن تبت فجيد أن لا تعاود الخطية، واذا لم تعاودها فجيد ان تعرف ان ذلك بمعونة الله، واذا عرفت ذلك فجيد أن تشكره علي نعمته وتلازم سؤاله في اراحة معونته.
+ قال انبا تيموثاوس:
” اذا أنت سقطت فلا تتوان، ولا تكسل، بل قم بسرعة، واذا ضللت أسرع بالرجوع الي خلف حتي تجد الطريق المستقيمة، لأن الطريق المستقيمة حسنة جدا وليس فيها دوران، ولا تحتاج الي طول الزمان، بل بسرعة تصل الي مدينة السلام.
(ج) محاسبة النفس
+ قال مار اسحق
اذا ما أفرزت نفسك للتوبة، فكل يوم لا تصادفك فيه محقرة لا يكون له حساب عندك، وكل يوم لا تجلس فيه ساعة بينك وبين نفسك، متفكرا بأي الشياء اخطأت، وبأي أمر سقطت، لتقوم ذاتك فيه، فلا تحسبه من عداد أيام حياتك، الويل لمن لا يبكي، ولا يتضايق، ولا ينقي عيوب نفسه، ما دام هناك وقت للتوبة، لأنه هناك بغير ارادته بأمواج النار ينقيها، حتي يوفي آخر فلس عليه، الذي هو الزلة الصغيرة.
– كن مضيقا علي نفسك ومحزنا لها لكيما ينطرد العدو من امامك.
– اصطلح أنت مع نفسك فتصطلح مع السماء والأرض.
– افحص ذاتك باستقصاء، وانظر بأي نوع زلت، واطلب من الله أن يغفر لك.
– دن نفسك وحدك في اعمالك، حتي لا تنخدع بالاهمال والتهاون.
– افحص كل يوم فيم انت عاجز فيه، لئلا تتعب وقت شدتك.
– الانسان الذي يغضب ذاته دائما. ليتدبر بمقتضي حكم النية، لن يخطيء بلا توبة.
– من كان قلبه غير منسحق وغير محزون من الله، فلن ينعتق من الطياشة.
– من يصالح نفسه آخر ممن يصالح شعوبا، وهو مغتصب منقسم علي ذاته.
+ قال شيخ:
يجب أن نحاسب نفوسنا كل يوم ونفتقد حياتنا بالتوبة.
+ قال الأب نستاريون:
يجب علي الراهب ان يحاسب ذاته كل مساء وكل صباح، ماذا صنعنا مما يشاء الله، وماذا عملنا مما لا يشاء الله، لأنه هكذا عاش الأب ارسانيوس وهكذا نفتقد ذواتنا كل ايام حياتنا، لأن الانسان اذا عمل الكثير ولم يحفظه فقد أتلفه أما يعمل قليلا ويحفظه، فانه يبقي معه.
+ وقالت القديسة سفرنيكي:
” اذا أخطأنا الي ملوك العالم. السنا بغير ارادتنا نلقي في السجون ونعاقب؟ فسبيلنا من أجل خطايانا أن نحبس انفسنا، ونعاقبها بالأتعاب، لكي نطرد الذكر الطوعي بالعذاب العتيد “.
+ سئل مرة القديس آمونت الأسقف:
” ما هي الطريق الضيقة الكربة؟ ”
اجاب:
” أن الطريق الضيقة الكربة هي هذه: أ، يراقب الانسان فكره، ويقطع بوجه خاص هواه، وهذا هو ما يقصد بذلك القول ” قد تركنا كل شيء وتبعناك “.
سؤال:
كيف يستطيع انسان خاطيء ان يبتغي الرب في كل حين؟ ”
الجواب:
” لقد طلبت من الله أن يعرفني جواب سؤالك.
فقال لي:
” طهر قلبك من كل أفكار الانسان العتيق وأنا أجيبك الي سؤال قلبك لأن مواهبي انما تكون في الأطهار ولهم تعطي، وما دام قلبك يتحرك بالغضب وبالحقد وبسائر الأوجاع العتيقة، فلن تدخل فيه الحكمة، ان كنت تشتهي أن تنال نعمتي ومواهبي فاخرج العدو وابعده عنك. ومواهبي منها وبها.. تأتي اليك.
ألم تسمع أن عبدا لا يقدر أن يخدم ربين؟ فان كنت عبدي فلا تخدم الشيطان وان خدمته فلا تظن – فمن يشتاق الي مواهبي فليقف آثاري، لأن المشتبه الحمل لا شر فيه لقد قبلت الأوجاع كلها ولم أكلم فيها بشرا. ومع أني اوصيكم بأن تكونوا ودعاء مثل الحمام، اذ بي أجدكم وقد أتخذتم لأنفسكم قساوة الأوجاع – فانظروا لئلا اقول لكم: ” أمضوا الي سعير ناركم التي اضرمتموها “.
وعندما سمعت ذلك صرت أبكي ليتحنن علي كصلاحه، ولينجيني من شر الانسان العتيق ويبلغني الي الانسان الجديد لكيما أقبل كل ما يأتي علي بشكر فصل من أجلي كي أهرب من تزكية نفسي.
+ قال بعض الآباء:
” أن الله يحتمل خطايا العالم، أما خطايا أهل البراري فلا يحتمل لأن مما يطالب به أهل العالم يختلف عما يطلبه ممن قد تخلوا عن العالم. لأن من هو في العالم له أعذار كثيرة، فأما نحن فأي عذر لنا، نحن الذين قد قصدنا البرية وتغربنا فيها؟ الحقيقة أن عقابا شديدا ونارا تلتهب تلحق بالعارفين لمشيئة الرب ولا يسلكون بمقتضاها. “.
+ قال شيخ:
” أن الله يطيل روحه علي خطية العالم ولا يطيل روحه علي خطية البرية “.
+ وقالت القديسة سفرنيكي:
” أن كثيرين يسكنون الجبال، ويعملون عمل أشر الناس ويهلكون أنفسهم “.
